Oscar Cervantes named as new Assistant Director of Coaching
OAKLAND, California - Oakland Soccer Club (est. 1974) announces that Oscar Cervantes has been named as the official Assistant Director of Coaching. Born and raised in Oakland, Oscar joins the Club as it prepares for a busy 2023, with the expansion of our Women’s First Team and ongoing program work across many facets of the organization.
His lifelong experience working in youth soccer at the community level will serve our program well, and we are looking forward to the resources he will bring to best serve our coaches and maximize our Club’s team performances.
Oscar comes to Oakland Soccer Club with a life of work in the Oakland community. Originally a student of International Community School and a student-athlete at both Urban Promise Academy and Arise High School, Oscar returned to serve his East Oakland roots after finishing school at UC Davis in 2019. He immediately began coaching the youth soccer programs at Urban Promise and then at Arise High School, interfacing with many future Oakland Soccer Club players and strengthening the Oakland soccer ecosystem as a mentor.
Oscar joined Oakland Soccer Club’s First Team as a player for the 2020-21 season, further establishing his relationship to the Club and integrating his coaching practice into his role with OSC. His brother, OSC athlete and coach Julio Cervantes, is OSC’s Director of Coaching. Now, the two will reunite as a team to deliver guidance, oversight, and support to our coaching infrastructure.
Oscar comments, “when I first signed up to play for the Club’s First Team, I was excited to represent all the young kids that grew up in the environment that I grew up in, East Oakland. Now, as a coach, being able to help the youth develop gives me an opportunity to keep growing relationships and building community in my City. It allows me, as a coach, to reflect my own experiences in the lives of the youth I am working with. That’s about as Oakland as it gets.”
As community members with a deeply important role in supporting our Oakland youth, our coaches deserve the best tools and guidance to allow them to succeed. We are thrilled to bring Oscar Cervantes into the fold as our official Assistant Director of Coaching. Oscar brings great energy and a love for the game that will undoubtedly help our coaches maximize their impact and ensure OSC’s Club teams are competitive, enjoyable, and impactful in expanding access to the sport of soccer.
