OSC appoints Matheus Menezes as Director of Coaching - March 5, 2021
Oakland Soccer Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Mathues Menezes as the club’s new Director of Coaching, effective immediately. In his new role, Menezes will work with the OSC Board as well as with club Technical Director Benno Nagel to oversee all youth development programming while also working with OSC coaches on ongoing personal and educational development opportunities so that they can best serve our Oakland youth. As DOC, Matheus will also work as an assistant coach within the recently launched OSC adult soccer program, ensuring that OSC youth have a well defined and connected pathway forward into the OSC adult program and beyond. OSC Co-president Edward Stephen had this to say on the hiring of Menezes, “We are very excited to have Matheus join our program. It is a great opportunity for him to take ownership and design an innovative program to serve our youth. I can’t wait to see the great things his expertise and enthusiasm will bring.”
Menezes is a native of Brazil, having immigrated to the Bay Area during elementary school, and going on to enjoy a standout youth career which culminated with the San Jose Earthquakes development academy as well as with NCAA Division 1 program University of Incarnate Word. He comes to OSC following successful stints at several recognizable East bay youth soccer clubs. From 2012-2017, Matheus worked at San Ramon Soccer Club, which included time spent as Recreational Program Director overseeing several thousand U6-U18 rec players. In 2017, he moved to Livermore Fusion SC where he was promoted to Technical Director for the U8-U12 age group as well as serving as the clubs Director of Futsal and a head coach at the NPL level. A major proponent of futsal as a tool for US player development, Matheus is also the past Girls Technical Director of East Bay Diablos Futsal Club and went on to co-found Atletico Futsal Club, in 2019, which has successfully brought players together from over 9 east bay clubs. “I’m excited to be taking on this new challenge with Oakland SC. I believe in the huge potential of this Club and community. We want to show Oakland that we can provide access to a quality Youth Academy environment to families of all socio-economic backgrounds. I look forward to meeting the players, families and staff and getting to work right away.”
OSC Club Technical Director Benno Nagel had these words to add in welcoming Matheus to the OSC family, “We’re lucky to add someone of Matheus’ character to our program. You feel his energy immediately, which is vital for any young player, and his track record over the last several years and the progressions that he has achieved with his increasing roles at well established youth clubs means that he is ready for this next step in his journey. Both his passion and ambition for developing young players is very high and he will be well positioned to help us further develop our younger age groups to ensure that we establish a solid base of Oakland youth, over these next few years, to position the club for predictable and sustainable growth as we move things forward with the project across our youth and adult efforts.”
About Oakland Soccer Club: Since 1974 Oakland Soccer Club has provided affordable, high-quality opportunities for underserved youth in Oakland to develop skills for soccer, school, and life. Our goal is to remove the pay-to-play barriers restricting the youth of Oakland from participation in soccer and developing to their highest level.
