Oakland Soccer Club named official 2023 Project Play Champion
OAKLAND, California - Oakland Soccer Club (est. 1974) announces today that it has been named an official 2023 Aspen Institute Project Play Champion, joining a network of more than 20,000 organizations throughout the United States that take new, meaningful, and specific actions consistent with Aspen Institute’s Project Play Framework to support youth participation in sports.
The Aspen Institute’s Sport for All, Play for Life: A Playbook to Get Every Kid in the Game report, released in 2015, set the new standard for national policy on youth participation and engagement in sports. The report offers eight strategies aimed at best impacting the lives of children through sports participation, and is the basis from which Project Play was developed. It is “a unifying model for action, anchored in the values of health, equity and inclusion.” Check out more here: (https://www.aspenprojectplay.org/youth-sports/playbook).
Oakland Soccer Club is thrilled to partner with Aspen Institute this year as an official Project Play Champion. A central aspect of Oakland Soccer Club’s vision for an equitable soccer ecosystem is to facilitate access to high level development and playing experiences for Oakland women and girls. Our specific, meaningful action as a Project Play Champion in 2023 is to expand our womens and girls programs, starting with the debut of the Women’s First Team.
OSC's Women’s First Team will unite the diverse and skilled female players who grew up in the community and deserve an equal outlet to showcase their growth. Our Women’s First Team will compete in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) and will represent the final level of the club’s youth program for women and girls. The UPSL is a competitive league that will give OSC’s female players the experience to build skills and get exposure at a high level. We are excited to have our First Team selected as an official side and look forward to engaging matches in the season ahead.
These efforts are part of a larger club-wide effort to address gender disparities in youth soccer through investing in program elements that support the health and welfare of our female players. Keep an eye out for official Project Play activities at Oakland Soccer Club this next year as we continue to address and remove the social and economic barriers of entry that keep our women and girls from realizing their full potential, in sports and in life.
We gratefully extend our thanks to The Aspen Institute for awarding this honor to OSC, and look forward to our continued partnership. Check out Project Play here: https://www.aspenprojectplay.org/champions.
