OSC Women's First Team joins United Premier Soccer League (UPSL)
OAKLAND, California - Oakland Soccer Club (est. 1974) announces that its new Women’s First Team, slated to begin play in the Spring of 2023, is joining the United Premier Soccer League as an official team! Oakland Soccer Club is deeply committed to providing quality opportunities for women in our communities to participate in soccer, and this announcement confirms that the Women’s First Team will indeed have an opportunity to compete within the UPSL Women’s Divison next year.
A central aspect of Oakland Soccer Club’s vision for an equitable soccer ecosystem is to facilitate access to high level development and playing experiences for Oakland women. The UPSL is a competitive league that will give OSC’s women players the experience to build skills and get exposure at a high level. We are thrilled to have our First Team selected as an official side and look forward to engaging matches in the season ahead.
Mark Savvides, Head Coach of the Women’s First Team, comments, “It’s fantastic for the players to be taking part in the UPSL, as it’s the largest and most competitive pro-development league in North America. The competitiveness of the league seems to be growing rapidly each year and it’ll be a great platform for us to showcase our ability on a great stage. The fact that you have MLS Academy teams such as LA Galaxy joining the league on the Men’s side highlights how serious this competition is taken nationally. Exciting times are ahead as we bring high level women’s soccer to the City of Oakland.”
Ben Russell, Assistant Coach of the Women’s First Team adds more, “It’s exciting to be providing the Oakland community with a legitimate soccer pathway, and to be supporting our female soccer players with the next step to progress their careers. This is just the start of something promising!”
Founded in 2011, the United Premier Soccer League now hosts over 400 Clubs competing nationally across the United States. The league occupies the 4th tier of the US Soccer pyramid, just below the three professional tiers that make up US-based professional soccer. We look forward to showing the country the power and grace of our Oakland women players!
Oakland Soccer Club is hosting tryouts for the Women’s First Team on December 3rd @ 12 noon & 4th @ 10 am, at Fremont High School. We encourage any and all women from the Oakland community to try out, particularly those with prior playing experience at the collegiate (or equivalent) level. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends, build community, and express your passion for the game! Come join our movement to represent the Town and bring pride to our Oakland community.
